Workshops & Seminars

1st Workshop:

Our first workshop was held on March 1, 2021 virtually. We introduced quite a number of areas. We first explained the overview of the project, including the timeline and goals. The pedagogical framework was also discussed in the workshop (click this for more details). Additionally, the affective outcomes were also mentioned. In this section, we reviewed the cognitive, affective and behavioral aspects of cultural competence, “how do others define & measure them?” and “How do you want to define them for your own course?”. We concluded the workshop with “Takeaway for Today?”, teachers added what they learnt from the workshop to the Google Doc.

2nd Workshop:

In Workshop 2 (April 13, 2021), Dr. Steve Chatelier focused on affective approaches to learning and teaching, including introducing case studies and theory about affectively-involving pedagogical activities. Participating staff discussed these case studies and the connection between affect and cognition.

3rd Workshop:

In Workshop 3 (June 17, 2021), Dr. Emma Buchtel introduced the activities and pilot survey results of the two pilot courses, with Dr. HO Wai Yip and Ms. Elke M. F. Van Derminjnsbrugge elaborating on their relevant activities and motivation. We examined the pilot survey measure in detail. Participating staff were asked to discuss in breakout rooms (1) which aspects of Affective Cultural Competence as measured by the survey were most relevant to their particular course, (2) which emotions they expected / wanted students to experience in the course, and (3) what help they needed from the TDG or from other staff to further develop their activities.

4th Workshop:

In Workshop 4 (June 29, 2021), Dr. Bidisha Banerjee introduced her past class activities as a case study. A shared padlet was distributed where staff members posted their plans for relevant activities, linking the cognitive outcomes/learning to their desired affective outcomes and affective engagement for students. Staff members introduced their activities to the whole group and we engaged in whole-group discussion to help improve activities, get new ideas for improvement or alternative / more “experiential” activities, and share resources.
